Black Friday can be a wonderful and terrible “holiday.” The awesome deals are as sweet as Thanksgiving pumpkin pie, but the lines and crazy people are enough to keep you home. We have some tips for you to be able to go out and score those great deals without getting a headache or worse, trampled.
Tip #1: Scan the advertisements ahead of time
Don’t throw away all of the black Friday ads that come in the newspaper. Go through them and make a list of items that you want to buy. Some retailers even have previews online. Take advantage of these! Making a list can also help you budget and not spend more than you can afford.
Tip #2: Make a game plan
Do your research and find out when stores open and close, then plan accordingly. Some stores offer certain big ticket items throughout the day, so pay attention to those. Make a list of the order in which you want to shop so you won’t forget anything or miss sales.
Tip #3: Pack snacks & plan your outfit beforehand
We’re not saying to plan a runway-ready outfit. You should plan to wear something comfortable and weather appropriate to avoid miserable waits in line (in the rain or snow, yuck!). Having clothes set and ready to go will help reduce your stress. Also, be sure to pack snacks in your purse to avoid being “hangry.” This can also help you save money and avoid the unhealthy fast food temptations.
Tip #4: Price matching
Find out which stores will do price matching, and use it to your advantage. This goes along with tip number 1. Even if you don’t plan on shopping at a certain store, still take note at the sales they are having. If their price is better and the store you’re shopping at price matches, you’re golden…and you saved yourself time.
Tip #5: Read the fine print
Sweet, that sweater is 70% off! Maybe not. Check to make sure that clearance items are returnable. If you’re buying it for yourself, try it on. If you’re giving it as a gift, you should opt for an item they can return in case they don’t like it or it doesn’t fit.
If all else fails, shop online. Many stores offer the same deals online and you can stay in bed sipping coffee, in your PJs with your dogs snuggled around you.
